EMPPO: Responding to Neglect (Level 3)

This course is for multi-agency operational staff and managers who are in regular contact or carry out direct work with children, young people and/or their parents or carers.

Are there any pre-requisites for attending this course?

Applicants must have previously completed Level 2 Child Protection Awareness Raising and Response training (either through Learnpro, or a virtual or face-to-face session). In advance of attending the course, you should ensure you are familiar with Edinburgh and the Lothians Multi-agency Child Protection Procedures.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Define neglect and the different types of neglect - recognise its signs and indicators across different age groups and settings.

  • Understand the short- and long-term impact of neglect on brain and child development.

  • Apply tools and frameworks to support professional curiosity, analytical thinking and decision-making.

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of multi-agency roles and responsibilities in responding to neglect.

  • Know when and how to escalate concerns and advocate for children and families where neglect is suspected or confirmed.

How will the training be delivered?

The training will be delivered on a multi-agency basis by professionals from Health, Social Work and the Child Protection Lead Officer.
