Protecting Children and Young People with Disabilities

The aim of this training is to highlight the vulnerability of disabled children and support practitioners identify and respond to concerns about neglect and harm. Disability awareness and effective communication are important to ensure children and young people with disabilities are safe.

Who is this learning for?

Practitioners working with, or who may work with, children and young people with disabilities. This includes those who have a key role in all stages of intervention with the family and particularly those who work to the functions of the named person role. (For example, named health visitor, named educational contact etc).

Are there any pre-requisites for attending this course?

Applicants must have previously completed Level 1 Child Protection Awareness Raising and Response training (either through eLearning, virtual, or face-to-face training). In advance of attending the training, you should ensure you are familiar with The Inter-agency Child Protection Procedures for Edinburgh and the Lothians.

What are the learning outcomes?

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the specific vulnerabilities of disabled children

  • Be aware of the skills needed to communicate and engage with disabled children and young people

  • Discuss the evidence from research

  • Identify barriers to disclosure and detection; and

  • Develop strategies to minimise vulnerability.
