NHS Education: Spider in the Glass: webinar Part 1 -Introduction to Spider in the Glass - Exploring a Trauma-Informed Response to Domestic Abuse

Author Myra Ross is a Health Improvement Specialist with the Health Improvement Team, in Public Health NHSH. Myra is also a retired Police Officer with a special interest in domestic abuse and child protection. She has spent many years working with young people with care experience, within the Care System and in education.

Myra developed the Spider in the Glass model and uses this in her training sessions. She was previously the training officer for the Highland Violence Against Women Partnership where she was responsible for writing the Imagine poem as part of the national 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence. Myra uses poetry and storytelling to create understanding and enhance the learning on gender-based violence and the abuse of power.

About this webinar

This webinar aims to bring awareness to experiences of domestic abuse and show what a trauma informed response to domestic abuse looks like in practice.

Who is this session for? Professionals who support or work with people affected by or experiencing domestic abuse/ coercive controlling behaviours within a relationship, and those seeking to understand trauma within that context.

Aims of Session:

  • To strengthen participant's understanding of how to take a trauma-informed and responsive approach to supporting people who live with/ have lived with domestic abuse/ coercive controlling behaviours in relationships.

  • To strengthen participant's understanding of domestic abuse/ coercive controlling behaviours within relationships and ways to respond effectively to it within our professional roles when supporting people.

  • To raise awareness of the experiences of gender-based violence, with a focus on domestic abuse and coercive control.
