NHS Education: Spider in the Glass: webinar Part 3 -The Abusive Relationship - People with Learning Disabilities

Author Myra Ross is a Health Improvement Specialist with the Health Improvement Team, in Public Health NHSH. Myra is also a retired Police Officer with a special interest in domestic abuse and child protection. She has spent many years working with young people with care experience, within the Care System and in education.

Myra developed the Spider in the Glass model and uses this in her training sessions. She was previously the training officer for the Highland Violence Against Women Partnership where she was responsible for writing the Imagine poem as part of the national 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence. Myra uses poetry and storytelling to create understanding and enhance the learning on gender-based violence and the abuse of power.

About this webinar

The session revisits the model of The Spider in the Glass, this time with a Learning Disabilities lens.  The session will look at how the abuse of power in relationships can lead to abuse and exploitation.  It will explore:

  • The impact of a remote and rural location

  • Methods of exploitation

  • Why vulnerable people are targeted

  • How can we identify the signs

  • How do we prevent harm.
