What do volunteers do?
- Offer friendship and relieve isolation, brighten someone's day with a visit.
- Keep the person company in their own home for a couple of hours per week, have a chat, offer a listening ear.
- Or help them get out and about, go for a coffee etc.
There is no typical volunteer, volunteers come from a range of backgrounds, all we require is that people have time to listen and show a caring interest in others who need extra support. We welcome both male and female volunteers.
Volunteers must be a minimum age of 18 years old (there is no maximum age) and will be asked to give a six-month minimum commitment to the befriending service.
New volunteers are required to complete an application form giving the names and addresses of two referees, undertake a disclosure check and attend a preparation training day which equips them for their befriending role. We also offer volunteers regular support and provide a variety of other optional training courses.

Students
The Strive Befriending Service offers placements to students. Students are a valuable resource and they can bring a range of skills and experiences which particularly benefit the young people who use our services. We are happy to offer placements to people studying in the areas of social care, health care, working in communities, psychology etc. We are not, unfortunately, in the position to offer heavily supervised student placements.
So if you....
Have a couple of hours spare per week (day/evening or weekends) are interested in meeting people, learning new skills and gaining confidence.
